A new acupuncture technique is helping some people decrease the appearance of wrinkles and look years younger.

NewsCenter 5's Rhonda Mann reported Friday that for centuries, acupuncture has been used to treat everything from pain to depression. Now, acupuncture is the latest technique in facial rejuvenation.

Facial acupuncture involves small needles that are tapped into pressure points on the face. Practitioners then stretch skin from the chin line to the scalp. Practitioners said that it increases blood flow to the area, providing instant color and tighter muscle tone.

"It doesn't have any side effects. Your face is never going to look burned or stretched. You're going to look younger and more glowing," Acupuncture Specialties Group's Anna Raynua said.

Women with hormonal imbalances or women who are under high stress are good candidates for the procedure, experts said.

Acupuncture practitioners said that the procedure balances the entire body's energy system.

"Our treatment not only approves the appearance, the exterior of the body, but also addresses issues of health and inner fitness. It's very appealing for people," Acupuncture Specialties Group's Stas Gavronsky said.

A published study of 300 patients found that 90 percent of the patients who had acupuncture showed an evening out of wrinkles after just one treatment.

Each session costs $150. Practitioners said that patients would need about 12 sessions to get the best result.

Penny Prather said that she is a believer in the procedure. She has had monthly treatments for the past two years.

"I felt pale and not as healthy as I might," Prather said. "It feels firmer. It's healthier. It just feels healthier."
